Snow Ice Cream

It finally happened! SNOW! I stumbled across this recipe on Frugal Upstate. Plus, it's a nice treat after all the hard work you put in while shoveling.

Enjoy!

Snow Ice Cream

Ingredients:
  • 6 C of very clean snow
  • 1/2 C Sugar
  • 1 C Milk
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
Directions:
  • Put the snow in your biggest bowl.
  • Sprinkle sugar over the top of the snow.
  • Add milk & vanilla and then gently stir until the snow squishes down to about 1/4 of the volume you started with.

Once everything seems fully combined, dish into bowls and enjoy immediately!

Super Cute Mother's Day Craft

Mother's Day is upon us once again.  Each year, I buy my Mom flowers for her garden.  It's what she always asks for and she can enjoy the flowers all summer long.  However, when summer is gone, I'd like her to have something special that will last all year round.

This year I am having Mason help me make a hand print canvas with a recent photograph on it.  This is a super cute idea and the possibilities are really endless.

Here's what you have to do.  Go to your local craft store (probably Michael's or A.C. Moore) and buy whatever size blank canvas you want to use.  The ones I purchased came two in a pack and were on sale for only $2.99.  I used an 8x10 size and could have easily gone bigger.  I didn't want to go bigger in this particular case because I know that my Mom sometimes places treasures like this on display in the china cabinet.

While at the craft store, I also purchased some stickers and "bling on a roll" to make a frame for the picture.  That cost about $8.00.  I originally was going to use ribbon to frame the picture, but found this instead.  It looked perfect for the job and it already had adhesive on the back of it.

Next, choose your favorite colors of washable finger paint to make the hand prints.  Mason chose orange since there was orange in the sweater he was wearing in the picture.  I chose pink for Amanda since that matched her outfit in the picture.  It also complimented the stickers and "bling" I bought.

Let the hand prints dry and decorate as you like!  Here is my finished masterpiece.  I think it turned out pretty cute and was very inexpensive to make.

This is a gift that definitely will last a long time to come. While I'm at it, I am making one for myself too!

What To Do With All The Leftover Plastic Easter Eggs

So, as I clean up after Easter and put all the decorations away for another year, I realize I have more and more of these plastic Easter eggs.  Someone has to tell the Easter Bunny to stop dropping so many eggs at my house.

I wondered, what else can these little eggs be used for?  To my surprise, lots!  There are really so many fun games and crafts that you can choose from.  I wasn't crafty enough to come up with all of these good ideas, but here are some of my favorites that I have come across in my search.

From the blog, Craft, Interrupted:

From raiseaboy.com:

Egg Spelling Game

Egg Spelling GamePreparation: Choose words according to the age and development of your child.
If your child is in school, use the spelling words or vocabulary words that he needs to learn that week.
For young children the first words they should learn to read are CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) like mom, dad, cat, dog, hat, etc. You should also include their names and names of family members.
Type the words out on the computer in large print and cut the words apart. Include the letters for one word in one egg. Place the eggs in an egg carton, basket or other container.

The Game: Have your child take one egg, unscramble the letters and then go grab another egg until he has unscrambled all the words. Once he’s practiced a few times it can even become a race to see if he can beat his own time (but only if this helps his learning and doesn’t create stress).

Learning Tip: Do not place the egg container next to your child. Make this an active game because movement anchors learning! After unscrambling a word, your child should walk, hop, skip, march, or crawl to get to the next egg. Above all, make it active and fun and if it stops being fun, take a break!

Boo-boo Bunnies

Looking for a basket stuffer for Easter instead of candy?  Here is a super cute bunny idea to help your child feel better when they are down and out or have a boo-boo.

Materials:
  • small towel or washcloth
  • rubber band (or use clear plastic ponytail holders)
  • thin ribbon
  • google eyes
  • small pom-pom (for the nose)
  • craft glue

 Directions:
  1. Fold the washcloth in half to form a triangle, then roll it from the top point to the long side and fold in half.
  2. Fold washcloth in half again so that the loose ends point back toward the original fold.  Place a rubber band around the washcloth about 2 inches from the fold.
  3. Cover the rubber band with ribbon and make a bow.
  4. Glue the eyes and pom-pom nose onto the bunny.
  5. When the glue is dry, either insert a small ice pack or small plastic bag (snack size) inside the bunny's tummy section, with instructions to add ice to the bag or place a frozen ice pack inside the boo-boo bunny.
  6. Place in your child's Easter basket and you will be ready to give to your toddler to help get rid of ouchies when needed.

Easy Valentine Treats

Everyone knows how to make Rice Crispy Treats.  Here is a super simple twist for Valentines Day to make your treats extra special.  This is also perfect for little hands to help out with!

Ingredients:
  • 4 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 package (10 oz., about 40) regular marshmallows  or 4 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 6 cups Crispy Rice Cereal
  • red food coloring
  • white chocolate chips, if desired

Directions:

     1. To begin, lightly coat a 10- by 15-inch baking sheet
with cooking spray and set it aside.

     2. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add
        marshmallows and stir continuously
until completely melted. Remove from heat.

    3. Stir in drops of red food coloring until the color
receives a thumbs-up from the chef.

     4. Add Crispy Rice Cereal.  Stir until they are evenly
         and well coated.

     5. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press
         mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with
         cooking spray.
     6. Cool slightly.   Cut out hearts with the cookie
cutter. Place hearts in a clear plastic bag or on
a plate and they're ready for giving

**MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS: In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow the rest of the steps as noted above.  Microwave cooking times may vary.

**I split the batter in half and kept some to cut for squares and some to cut out for hearts.  That way, I was able to make a tray with squares for the adults and bite sized hearts for the kids.

I know the possibilities are endless with this dessert, but I made a special heart for my husband,  Since my husband loves white chocolate, I melted some white chocolate chips and drizzled it over the big heart.  YUM!

Puffy Paint

Mason loves to paint, especially with his hands.  I have been looking for new kinds of paint to try with him, something with a different texture than regular paint.  This simple puffy paint recipe seems just right!  It is great too, since most people will have all the ingredients needed for this recipe on hand.

Yields about 1.5 cups of paint

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons poster or tempura paint

Directions:
  1. Mix all of the ingredients together
  2. Paint and have fun!

Homemade Stickers

I have been looking for a new and different activity to do with Mason.  With the new baby, I have been looking for activities that can be done at the table with relatively little mess.  Making homemade stickers is the perfect activity!  Along with being able to spend time with Mason and Amanda together, Mason can work on his cutting and fine motor skills all while having fun!  These stickers also come in handy as these can be used on his reward charts for tasks accomplished throughout the day.

Yields: 1/2 cup sticker glue
Ages: 18-40 months
Duration: 45 minutes

What You Need:
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 4 packs of unflavored gelatin
  • 1 tablespoon peppermint extract
  • sticker material such as drawings cartoons or magazine pics
  • small brush
Directions:
  • Boil vinegar in a small saucepan
  • Add gelatin then reduce to low heat and stir until gelatin is completely dissolved.  Add extract and mix well.
  • Let the mixture cool before painting on the back of the chosen image.  Once dry, you will have stamps or stickers the child can use by moistening with a dab of water.

Orange Cream Cookies

I am super excited about this cookie recipe!  One of my favorite flavors is orange creamsicle.  I treat myself once or twice a year when I buy orange creamsicle fudge from our shore vacation or when we go to the Renaissance Faire.  And, of course, you can always buy orange creamsicle ice cream. YUM!

I was introduced to this recipe around the holidays when my husband brought home a smattering of cookies from his office party.  I had to try this one out, so now, I have a cookie recipe from Betty Crocker that helps to fill those orange creamsicle cravings.

Ingredients
  • 1 pouch (1lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie mix
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 5 drops yellow food coloring
  • 2 drops red food coloring
  • 1.5 cups white vanilla baking chips

Directions
  • Heat oven to 350 degrees.  In large bowl, stir all the ingredients except the baking chips until soft dough forms.  Stir in baking chips.

  • On ungreased cookie sheets, drop dough with 1 1/2 tablespoon-siz cookie scoop or by rounded tablespoonfuls about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake 9 to 10 minutes or until dough is set (do not overbake).  Cool 1 minute from cookie sheets to cooling racks.  Cool completely.

Makes 3 dozen cookies.
